Boba Fett and Firespray

TOYPHOTOGRAPHS

This is the Hasbro toy version of Boba Fett’s spaceship called Firespray.

My goal here was to create a comic book look.

Using my Fuji X100V mounted on a Platypod Extreme w/ Platypod Ergo ballhead, I photographed Firespray against a blue screen. It was held up on a stand that I made from a new — secret product I cannot tell you about yet but will soon enough.

Toy On Stand Against Blue Screen

It’s simple set up. It helps to know what your background will be when you’re done with the final image. I planned to composite this photo using Photoshop into an ART AI background I made of outer space and a distant planet. The light source here is a LumeCube Panel Pro camera left which matches the light source in the background which is also camera left. In other words, the lighting choices are deliberate. If I placed my light on the other side of the image it wouldn’t make sense.

AI Art Background I Created Using Text Commands in DALL-E and JASPER AI

Here is the AI Background I created. (I used a mashup of DALL-E and JASPER AI — I still don’t have access to the Adobe Firefly Beta — hoping to get that soon.)

Toy Lifted Off The Bluescreen Background & Placed On Transparent Layer

The next step is to use selection tools to remove the blue color from the initial photo and then import that transparent layer into Photoshop to composite with the AI background. I removed the stand with the healing brush, and I tilted the space ship so it was on a more realistic angle for flight.

Once I had the composited image in Photoshop, I opened BORIS FX Optics as a plug-in and added everything from lighting adjustments to atmosphere, sfx like the rocket exhaust and lasers and then I did a color grade.

Last but not least, I ran the final image through Topaz Photo AI for any needed noise reduction, sharpening and resolution enhancement in one click and this is the result.

I realize that not many of my followers are tuned into the toy photos I make, but hopefully you can find something in my process that helps you. For instance, always pay attention to the angle of light.

Thanks for looking.

Remember, toys are joy.

I'm a toy photographer. I'm also delving into AI Art. I also help people get the most out of their Fuji X100 series cameras. (C) 2023
