It’s June — Vacation Month — I’m Spending My Money On a Toy Staycation

I know many people are restless. The pandemic has certainly upended most of our routines. Some of us haven’t seen family as often or visited our favorite places.

I get it. But I am not going anywhere because I am immunocompromised.

I do have some advice for those who — like me — are on a staycation rather than a vacation.

Use the money you would have spent on airfare, hotels, gasoline, road food, etc. on your hobby.

With the cost of everything going up right now, I see a voyage to my local toy store as the best place to travel to. And I can buy LOTS of action figures for the price of an airline ticket. And there will be no cancellations or delays!

If you share my hobbies — i.e., action figure collection and photography, you are always on vacation! At least you can make it feel that way. Embrace the idea that toy hunting is a journey all unto itself. Every time I head to a Walgreens or Walmart or GameStop (three of the best mass marketers that carry action figures — sometimes exclusives) I get excited.

It’s one of those things about being a toy hunter that drew me into the hobby. It’s ALL an adventure. I am ALWAYS on vacation — in my mind at least. I may wear a Hawaiian shirt and a straw hat while I’m on the prowl. It’s up to me to set my mind right. Aloha is a state of mind!

I am a nomad hunting memories and my youth. I am wanderer looking for that nostalgic toy that will bring me to a place of happiness.

CONCLUSION

If you don’t have the money or the energy or the good genes (that will protect you from the virus) then try my approach. Be on vacation in your mind. Spend that money on your hobby and have a great time. Make unboxing videos and photos and share them with the people you know in the hobby. Zoom, Facetime or just pick up an old fashioned telephone and tell a friend which new toy you bought.

I promise you that while it isn’t always going to fill every void in your life, it sure can help.

Remember — toys are joy.
